8/15/2017 0 Comments The Many Talents of Service DogsDogs can provide all kinds of love and friendship to their owners, but sometimes these furry friends receive specialized training to become a certified service dog. A service animal differs from a traditional pet by performing a multitude of daily tasks to benefit a disabled individual. These incredible creatures require diligent service dog training in order to legally be considered a service animal.
Service animals can assist different types of people in numerous ways. They may be assigned to individuals with physical disabilities, sensory impairments or mental health disabilities. These animals are highly obedient and do not act like regular “pets.” A service dog may assist his or her owner with physical tasks like answering doors or retrieving items that may be difficult for the owner to reach. Sometimes a service dog can help owners move around and provide additional stability while climbing stairs or standing up. Many dogs wear special identifying vests that can carry medicine or other necessary items an owner may need at any given time. Dogs that have successfully completed a professional service dog training program can also help individuals with panic disorder, PTSD, depression, other mood disorders and more. While also capable of physical tasks, these dogs are especially trained to provide specialized emotional support to his or her owner. Service dogs can help guide an owner who has become disoriented or disassociated and unaware of their surroundings. For panic attacks and OCD, service dogs can provide distractions and tactile stimulation. Ultimately, these services can include retrieving emergency help and identifying a psychiatric attack or episode. These are just a few of the ways that a service dog could assist his or her owner. Service dogs are not average pets, and they must be able to remain on task and focused despite various distractions. Quality service dog training from Specialty Dog Training can take months or even years to complete, but the benefits are worth the time and effort.
